No late activity for Gillingham
No late activity for Gillingham

The transfer window closed on Tuesday night at 11pm without any last minute activity either in or out at Priestfield.

With Gavin Tomlin having been signed on loan earlier in the month and Jo Kuffour signing on until the end of the season, Gillingham’s work on attracting new recruits was done in the first few weeks of January.

The month saw both Luke Rooney and Stefan Payne depart the club, balancing the books for Tomlin and Kuffour’s arrival.

What didn’t happen for The Gills, was adding some new defensive options. Matt Fry had been looked at in a behind closed doors friendly with Millwall last week, but Andy Hessenthaler opted against bringing in the West Ham United youngster.

Surprisingly enough, even after Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Accrington Stanley, Hessenthaler has once again elected not to dip into the transfer market to give him more options.

However, he does still have the chance to bring in someone on loan and that may well be the route Hessenthaler goes down if he feels he needs to strengthen his squad for the run in.

One person that has come back to Priestfield, is former Youth Team boss Mark Patterson who has returned in the role of Football Development Coach.

With Hereford set to visit Priestfield on Saturday, weather permitting, Gillingham will be going all out to get back to winning ways.

Chris Whelpdale comes back into contention for a place in the squad after overcoming a knee injury, however Jack Payne is rated as doubtful after picking up an ankle injury at Accrington.

Dennis Oli will no doubt miss out yet again with a bout of illness and concussion, whilst Matt Fish seems set to stay on the sidelines alongside Barry Fuller and Adam Birchall.

Danny Spiller resumed training this week, but Saturday’s game will come too soon for the midfielder.

Paulo Gazzaniga will undoubtedly claim his place in the starting eleven after patiently waiting his turn behind Ross Flitney who has shipped goals for fun in recent weeks and was hauled off at half time on Saturday.

Needing all three points on Saturday, fans can expect an attacking brand of football against a Hereford side that The Gills beat 6-1 earlier in the season.

Anything less than a win and Hessenthaler’s side could start to see their season drifting to a close with only nineteen games to go and eleven points behind the automatic promotion places.

Now is the time for the team and fans to stand together to lift the club as one.
